The colts from the horses down the road. Sometimes they are playing - chasing each other around the filed - as we go by. It really is like a postcard everywhere you look.

It was quite cool when we werw walking the dogs on Sunday (May 8th). Sure enough, we walked through a bit of hail - see the white spoks on Taz's back.

Beautiful day

The day dawned with an overcast sky, so it wasn't too beautiful. But Mother Nature left us a beautiful gift overnight with glittering hoar frost decorating the trees, shrubs, bushes, fence, etc. This photo was taken around 11am, so the sun had melted the hoar frost from the east-facing side of things.

Today was quite mild, only -4C, and the afternoon sun helped make it feel quite nice. This photo was taken just down the road, where the warmth was making the snow and ice (from our freezing rain about two weeks ago) slide off the roof of the barn. This horse will have to watch his head when he goes into the barn.

The Wedding - Sat Sep 19, 2009

The main purpose for our trip was the wedding, of course. This was the bride and groom making the speeches in the reception hall, which was a huge indoor riding arena that had been converted for the reception. (A lot of work went into that.)

The bride's family has a horse farm, or something like that, and her aunt and uncle prepared a special dressage display for the newlyweds. It was a beautiful day, as you can see. It was truly amazing to see these massive animals trotting along like synchronized dancers, and doing the Las Vegas showgirl walk, etc.

Of course, one of the best things about being away is coming home afterwards. And both Freda and Tawny were very happy to see each other!!

Weekend for firsts

Freda took one of our neighbour's daughters horseback riding. You can see Emma in the background. Unfortunately Freda pinched a nerve or something and wasn't able to go to work on Monday because of the pain.

Emma's sister Maddy (in green shirt) came by to see if we wanted to buy a raffle ticket for her camp. The girls kept telling each other to shut up, so they had some fun with a small strip of packing tape and a marker.


I was walking the dogs this morning and saw this little dead bird on the side of the road. I brought it home to give it a proper burial but thought I would try to find out what it was first. I thought it might have been a brown jay, but no such luck. Note the yellow tips on the tail feathers.

If you know what the bird is, leave a comment please.

Update July 24th 2009: The bird looks like a Cedar Waxwing, which has yellow on the tips of its tail feathers. Thanks for the tip, Mum.

Caution: Dogs at Play

Tawny loves playing catch, with a frisbee, ball, stick, anything really. She really likes things she can catch which means we try not to throw sticks because she could injure herself or get splinters in her mouth or caught between her teeth (yes, she has had this happen). We have a "frisbee" that is made from a firehose material that is supposed to be very tough. That's an admirable quality since dogs are very tough on their toys. Unfortunately the firehose frisbee doesn't actually fly like a frisbee too well. However, it is very flexible and there are several ways that the dogs can pick it up, so they both like it. Here, I luckily happened to catch Tawny running with the firehose "frisbee" - you can see her ears flapping in the breeze!

When Tawny gets tired, she sits down on the road and waits for you to throw the frisbee to her. Very funny!

Our neighbour came out with his dog Vasha and Taz and Tawny had a little play. Taz was preoccupied with chewing on his "bone" (rawhide roll) so he didn't play too long.


We walked down to see the horse Cooper, but sadly this was the best of the photos. Just as I went to take the photo, as I was petting his nose, he jerked his head up and all I got was this extreme close-up - haha!!

Walking the dogs

I was walking Tawny and Taz in the morning (Jan 6th) and Taz noticed something in the trees and starting whimpering when he gets all excited. I couldn't see anything, but I could see some branches moving a bit. I figured it was a squirrel but wanted to check it out.


Here's a close-up of the trees with the squirrel. I circled it so you can see it for yourself. They really blend in but Taz has the amazing senses - eyes, ears, nose - to be able to pick them out from quite a distance.


January 6th was a beautiful but cold day, but that doesn't stop Tawny from wanting to play. We have to make sure that Taz has a "bone" (rawhide roll) or another toy to keep him occupied because otherwise he will steal the toy right from Tawny's mouth. She is a happy dog that is willing to share so she gives it up to him. Silly girl!

It had been cold for quite a time so we hadn't been down to see the horses. As it wasn't so cold this day, we walked down to see Cooper (horse on the right) and his stable mate (don't know his name) and brought them some nice juice carrots. We bought a bag of carrots for their Christmas present but hadn't been able to share it with them because of the cold.

We had snow forecast for tomorrow so I took this photo of Tawny and Taz to document how little snow we really have, which is really just a light dusting...
